What do you do during your lunch break? How you take advantage of this time has a direct affect on your productivity. Your lunch time is about more than just scarfing down your meal. It’s about decompressing and recharging yourself so you can work more efficiently later.
Lunch time is often times neglected because there is an emphasis on working harder for longer periods of time. However, working longer is not always as good as working smarter.
By neglecting to utilize your lunch time effectively you are not going to be working as efficiently as you could be, doing you and the company you work for a disservice.
So do you want to decrease stress while increasing productivity and creativity? Then read on for these 9 tips to take better advantage of your lunch break.
The first thing you should do during your lunch break is to decompress. Take several deep breaths, relax and let all the tension in your neck and shoulders go. I have an app on my Apple Watch that periodically reminds me tp take deep breaths by taking me through a series of breathing exercises.
Take A Real Break
Don’t bring your work with you or even talk about work. This is your special time to get away and refresh yourself. Your employer allows you to not work for half an hour so be sure to fully take advantage of this.
Enjoy Your Food
Don’t just shovel the food down your mouth as quickly as possible. Enjoy your food. You do everything in a rush at work so at the very least you should take your time eating. Eat food that energizes you rather than food that drains you of your energy like fast food.
Get Away From Your Desk
Sitting for too long can have adverse health effects. Get away from it all. Don’t have a screen in front of you and go outside for a breath of fresh air. It can do wonders for your productivity.
Rest Your Eyes
At work, most of us stare at a screen or at paperwork all day, constantly reading. Use your break to rest your eyes. That means stay away from all screens such as your smartphone. During your break is one of the only times you have to close your eyes and give them a break.
Physical activity stimulates the chemicals in your brain, leaving you feeling happier and more relaxed. If your job requires you to sit at a desk all day why not go outside for a quick walk?
Take A Nap
If you can, take a quick power nap to recharge your mind. It can relieve stress and give you a fresh start.
Treat your half hour or one hour break the same way a professional sports team would. Use this time to regroup and reassess your plans for the rest of the workday.
You can utilize your break to get in touch with friends and to reconnect with old ones. Talking about your day at work can de-stress you.
